California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard is WORKING
Since inception, the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) has displaced 25 billion gallons of petroleum with renewable fuels.
CARB: Support Clean Fuels and a Strong LCFS
In 2023 alone, the LCFS helped reduce GHG emissions by 30.6 million metric tons CO2e, which is the equivalent of taking 6.7 million cars off the road!
Thanks to California’s Leadership, We Are:
Exceeding our greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals
Reducing dependence on foreign oil
Lowering costs through market competition
WHAT’S AT STAKE?
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is considering changes to the LCFS that could impact its effectiveness. California can only meet its climate and carbon reduction goals with a strong, technology-neutral program that supports an “all of the above” clean fuels solution.
WHY SUPPORT A TECH-NEUTRAL LCFS?
California can't reach its 2030 carbon reduction goals without a strong LCFS.
A technology-neutral LCFS invests in a range of fossil fuel alternatives, including biofuels and infrastructure for the adoption of Zero Emissions Vehicles (ZEVs). A strategy supporting multiple clean fuels will achieve GHG reductions more quickly and at lower cost than picking a single solution.
CLEAN FUELS = GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, PUBLIC HEALTH & THE ECONOMY
As California is expanding its ability to produce clean electricity, it’s critical to continue investing in biofuel production from organic waste streams – like dairy manure and landfills – to reduce GHG emissions and protect our environment.
The science is clear: reducing GHGs and improving air quality will yield dramatic public health benefits for our families and future generations.
What about the economy? Renewable fuels have become a proven economic driver and job creator in our communities – for farmers and farmworkers, local businesses and municipalities – and also create market competition to drive down costs.
METHANE CAPTURE, BIOGAS CONVERSION IS CRITICAL
The LCFS invests in infrastructure that captures methane gas from organic waste and diverts it from the air to create clean fuels like biomass-based diesel, electricity, hydrogen, and renewable natural gas. This investment has dramatically reduced California emissions by capturing a major pollutant at the source and converting it to clean fuels that power heavy-duty trucks and buses.
